Vaishya community are the business men of Vedic Society. One of the professions of this community is to raise cattle.

Gopashtami (Devanagari: गोपाष्टमी ISO15919: gōpāṣṭamī) is the day when the cowherd boys are initiated into herding cattle.

The cows are worshipped on this day, then after proper Vedic injunctions the young cowherd boy goes with older cowboys to the pastures with the cattle to graze them.
